Born
into a family of opera singers and musicians, Bolan grew up in a world
of classical music and art. He started painting at the age of twelve,
and rapidly began to explore different styles and techniques. Bolan
has travelled the world extensively, but now lives and works in London.
Reflection
Bolan's
style has evolved over many years and reflects the various cultural
and
geographic influences that his travels have wrought. Bolan's paintings
have been described as grisailles.
This is not strictly true, as the artist subtly blends many colours
and shades to produce the final effect.
This minimal colouring is born from the Far Eastern tradition, whereas
the shapes
and forms are derived from the Renaissance masters; Titian in particular.
These styles unite to produce Bolan's unique manner of painting. The
greys, blacks and subtle colours all blend and shimmer to produce
highly atmospheric images.

Through Sean Bolan's art we are privileged to glimpse a bygone era,
capturing a Britain that has largely disappeared, swept away in the
name of progress, his pictures recreate our bountiful heritage. Interpreted
in Sean's talented and unique style, whether a railway, transport,
countryside or military picture, each depicts the everyday doings
of ordinary people; a moment in time evoked and so atmospheric, we
can smell the smoke or feel that cold wind blowing.

Sean was born in 1948 in Rowlands Castle, Hampshire, he studied graphics,
photography and film making at Portsmouth College of Art. A self taught
artist, he turned professional in 1976, leaving his post as signalman
on the railway to further his artistic career. So well respected was
his work he was elected Chairman of the Guild of Railway Artists in
the early '80's. His works, mainly in water-colour, but also in gouache
and oil hang in the Science Museum, National Railway Museum, Brigade
of Guards Museum and in the Sergeants' Mess of the 1st. Battalion
of the Grenadier Guards, national institutions, multinational organisations
as well as many private collections all over the world.
His pictures help us to remember our social history, they touch us
with fond nostalgia, their timeless charm and realism is attributed
to his painstaking research and driving desire for accuracy, capturing
that moment in time which the camera missed.
His much sought after paintings are always available from GRIMES HOUSE
in Moreton in Marsh.

Bolan was born in Shirebrook, Notts on 2nd May 1913
Way back in 1937, to be exact at 8.30 am on Wednesday the 9th June
a young Drummer, Edward Bolan, (2611452) of the 3rd Battalion marched
out onto the square of Chelsea Barracks to beat "Stand to Arms"
prior to the Trooping The Colour ceremony on Horse Guards Parade in
London. (The Colour being trooped was that of the 1st Battalion Coldstream
Guards).
There
happened to be a photographer in the vicinity who took a photograph
of Drummer Bolan, nothing extraordinary about that but this photographer
entered the photograph in a competition which was being held by the
firm of Kodak. The photograph won First Prize in the military section
in Kodak's Photo of the Year Competition. Not only was it used for
recruiting purposes, but is was also used to advertise Kodak Films
nationally.
The
original photograph was much larger than that shown here and featured
other members of the
battalion in the background.
